The category called Fat brings together letters with rounded or curved ends. In the universe of sign painting in Pernambuco, they feature heavily, since they are often found on the urban landscape The Serif category includes manual signs that have small extensions at the end of the letters – the serifs. These can have different shapes – square, rounded, Tuscan, triangular, etc. The serifs make up a restricted sample in the photographic collection as they were not found very frequently in the region studied. This classification was elaborated by Finizola (2010) during the survey Typographical Panorama of Popular Letters: a case study in the city of Recife. The categories are fluid, and the same sign can present characteristics of more than one style.
