Recife, founded in 1537, is the state capital of Pernambuco, located on the Atlantic coast in the Northeast region of Brazil. While it has a strong political history of resistance, the city is also marked by its intense cultural life. Much of its economy comes from providing services and commerce, which favors the insertion of sign painting and lettering into the landscape from the most affluent neighborhoods through to the low income neighborhoods.
